Exciting New Design & Utility Patents for Guitar & Fun New Methods of Play!
NEW for New Year 2026! Hi, I’m a musician performing at summer camps and at other venues in upstate NY. A few years ago I was trying to teach basic guitar to a friend who was very enthusiastic about learning, but lacked finger coordination to play even basic chords. This inspired me to conceive of this way to enable beginners to easily play guitar without needing complicated fingerings and that even allows for intuitive play with as little as one finger at a time.
The main idea involves tuning all the open strings to the same note, preferably in different octaves, and applying a keyboard-like pattern to the fretboard along the neck, so that pressing down with even a single finger on a string or plurality of strings at each fret produces the associated note in higher or lower octaves or sounded together depending on how the stings are strummed. By simply placing or sliding a finger up and down the fretboard one can easily play any note desired and immediately play any melody or song in this way. Why play air guitar when you can play real guitar?
Applications were submitted for related design and utility patents and I’m pleased to announce that both patents were granted, first design patent “GUITAR NECK,” issue date 1/16/24, patent number D1011411, and most recently utility patent “NECK AND FRETBOARD MODIFICATION AND METHOD OF TUNING TO FACILITATE PLAY,” issue date 12/30/2025, patent number 12512082, see the attached PDF files for the full patents or search for the patents on our websites and at USPTO, Justia, or Google Patents. The sample figures shown explain better than a thousand words.
The typical acoustic and electric guitars illustrated show the novel modification of the guitar neck to have a pattern of white and black fret spaces corresponding to the familiar piano keyboard pattern of white keys for whole notes and black keys for half-notes. In the example figures shown all the open strings would be tuned to a G note, so that fret 1 is black for G#, fret 2 is white for A, fret 3 is black A#, fret 4 is white for B, fret 5 is white for C, and so on down the fretboard. The patents include multiple figures that show all such possibilities, similar white and black fret space sequences shifted down the successive fretboard spaces corresponding to whatever note or half-note is chosen to be the starting point for the open strings and showing the pattern for all 12 whole and half notes of the chromatic scale.
These designs and modifications of the guitar neck have immediate intrinsic, intuitive, and aesthetic appeal, since the light and dark colored fret spaces patterns make the guitar neck resemble the familiar black and white key arrangement of piano keyboards. However it is not merely ornamental, because especially when combined with alternative string tunings there is also immense functional value, enabling a fundamental revolutionary transformation of the guitar into practically a brand new instrument for both professionals and beginners, enabling play with even just a single finger of the fretting hand, to produce pleasing guitar sounds and qualities while eliminating typical complexities in learning to play. With this design and method professionals and even beginners can quickly and easily play songs and melodies. Anyone able to tap out a tune on a keyboard, even a finger at a time, will be able to play guitar this fun way.
The utility patent abstract reads: “Modifications to the neck and fretboard of stringed instruments to enable methods of play involving same-note tuning of a plurality of strings for increased ease of learning and to facilitate play,” and the patent explains the background problems the invention overcomes, the significant advantages it confers, new attachments that can be made for guitars, and entirely new types of professional quality guitars that can be manufactured with features facilitating this new method of play. Potential appealing names for such instruments might stress the “Key-Board,” “Key Neck,” or “Key Style” features, or that it is the “New Way,” “Cool Way,” “Easy Way,” “Fun Way” and for now “My Way Guitars.” In addition to greatly benefitting immense numbers of music enthusiasts, these ideas are also easily adaptable as products for children of all ages and the associated massive toy instrument market.
The novel benefits of these inventions are clear and obvious and they are sure to generate widespread interest and acclaim. For countless people this will definitely be the start of many enjoyable and revolutionary musical experiences that they never imagined would be possible. Please share this news with your friends and colleagues and let me know your feedback, including any suggestions you may have, including with regard to potential investment opportunities and/or marketing and licensing agreements for what is sure to be a very exciting, successful, and prosperous musical adventure for all.
